What is special about Dunster Beach? The simplicity of each day is what appeals – the quietude, experiencing the changing of the seasons at close quarters, the wildlife and the sounds of the sea. Exmoor’s hills sidle up close-by, forming a perfect backdrop. The West Somerset steam trains provide a soundtrack of nostalgic sounds and smells. Herons patrol the lake; sitting motionless on an old stone bridge balustrade, patiently awaiting breakfast. Frosty mornings; ducks and swans visit with their young hoping to be fed; neighbours frying bacon; hot sunny days with freshening sea breezes – loveliest of all …complete silence…
Like many I firmly believe in a ‘sense of place’. I attribute the calming influence of the Beach to the myriad memories of generations of people. My parents lived near Dunster in 1947; my return twenty-five years later completed our circle. Photographs prove that little has changed in sixty years - hence its beauty, sense of security, timelessness and quality.
The sea sets its own rhythm to each day - tidal movement constantly change the contours of the beach – wildflowers flourish seasonally. Dunster Beach offers a unique tranquillity – it is ultimately welcoming and healing – it really does wrap you in its arms – safe, sound and nurturing.
